‘Sanam Teri Kasam’ would have been a perfect romantic flick, had it been released in 90’s, but, for the generation of 2016, this movie is a wrong choice! The movie introduces us to two debutants in Bollywood, Harshvardhan Rane and Mawra Hocane, but their choice of the film is absolutely wrong! They deserved a better platform! There is nothing outstanding about the film's script, but the film's premise still holds a promise due to its unusual story and straightforwardness. Mawra Hocane shines and excels in the film with her extremely believable and superlative performance. There are places where she overtakes Harshvardhan in terms of performance. To conclude, we can say that the flick is a decent collection of good performances and superb music.
Every good love story has a touch of the absurd. But Sanam Teri Kasam is neither a believable romantic yarn nor are its stabs of stupidity within the realms of the passable. The film is helmed by not one but two directors, and that’s one too many, but it’s completely directionless. Its asinine and unending narrative convolutions reinforce long discarded stereotypes about gender roles and the idea of beauty. In the bargain, it falls back on mothballed devices, including a terminal illness – a deep tumour in the brain, no less – to add a tragic tinge to the mayhem. What makes Sanam Teri Kasam a farce without end is the senseless to-ing and fro-ing that the lovebirds do all through the film as the girl lurches from one ridiculous situation to another. This is an unmitigated disaster, a travesty of the medium that only a miracle can save from sinking without a trace.
Sanam Teri Kasam’, not to be confused with the ’82 film of the same name, is a manual of how Not to make a contemporary romantic film. The one to watch is fresh import from Pakistan, the interestingly-named Mawra Hocane. But the fresh-faced, unaffected Hocane rises above it all, and shows us how effervescence can light up the screen. Someone give her another movie, quick.
A brooding, disgruntled, gruffly man with a heart of gold falls in love with a simple girl from a traditional family... quite an unlikely pair? Well, not for Bollywood atleast. But you forgive director duo Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru just because of their perfect casting. When everything falls flat in the film, the lead pair hold the forte with their effortless chemistry. For a romantic drama, the film has its most essential element right - the love story is impeccable. Aashiqui 2 did a good job at bringing back the 90s' melodramatic romance back but Sanam Teri Kasam is barely as compelling.
