Just when you thought Shah Rukh Khan was not on top of his game, he makes a comeback. And how! Going back to his early acting days where twisted characters gave him his break, the king of romance still has what it takes to give you the creeps. One of the better Shah Rukh Khan scripts in years, Fan is not devoid of loopholes. But it still makes for a thrilling watch. The dialogues keep Fan in good stead; Sharat Katariya, the dialogue writer, is the one responsible for giving Gaurav a lovable outlook. His dialogues are true to the popular Delhi tone and he efficiently strikes a balance between the two Khans through language. It’s a total throwback to Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘90s avatars, but he once again shows how good he still is in that genre. Maneesh Sharma may look inspired from some Hollywood films, but overall he has managed an edge-of-the-seat thriller. As a whole, Fan delivers what it promised in the trailers. Logic may not be its strong point, but Shah Rukh most definitely is; he’s back in his elements after a long time. Watch it for him.

The second half of Fan, keeps people on the edge. Maneesh Sharma's story sheds its languidness of the first half and makes people sit straight and be scared post intermission. No one knows what the psychotic, obsessed, crazy Gaurav will do to get Aryan's attention. As the 50-something superstar ruling the box office for the last 25 years, Aryan Khanna is Shah Rukh Khan. When he doesn't play himself, Khan does a fabulous job in front of the camera. The supporting cast doesn't have much to do in this SRK vs SRK play. But Deepika Amin, Yogendra Tikoo, Waluscha de Sousa, Sayani Gupta and Shriya Pilgaonkar are all able wheels to carry Fan forward. Acting-wise, everyone else fades in front of SRK's Gaurav. The cinematography is commendable in Fan. Manu Anand's camera captures the bylanes of Delhi with as much expertise as the orange rooftops in Dubrovnik, Croatia. In all, understanding exactly what goes on in the mind of an obsessed fan or a troubled superstar is not easy. 'How can someone do this for a star?' is a question that has plagued a lot of us at several points in our lives. Maneesh Sharma and Shah Rukh Khan hand-deliver that mindscape - of both the fan and the star - on the screen.  And brilliantly. Watch a slice of Gaurav Chanana's life this week. The post-Dilwale Shah Rukh deserves that.

A double dose of a Bollywood superstar intent on pushing himself into new zones as an actor makes for a passably watchable spectacle in Maneesh Sharma's Fan. Fan is a rather odd admixture of the real and the make-believe. The former works quite well; the latter not so much. In the first half, the fact that Gaurav bears an uncanny likeness to Aryan Khanna does not invite any public gasps of surprise from those who run into him in the street and elsewhere. But in the second half, visitors at Madame Tussauds as well as the London police are taken in by his visage and believe him to be the movie star the world knows. Fan works for the most part because it has the fabulous SRK act as a 'young' star-struck boy. His energetic performance is worth the price of the ticket - if not more. It is fascinating to watch the actor making the transition from a gawky movie-crazy youngster to a swaggering Bollywood star mimic on stage to a psychologically unhinged stalker who pulls out the stops. Fan is proof that even if SRK isn't 25 years old, he certainly has the kind of enthusiasm that might put many 25-year-old actors to shame.

Shah Rukh Khan is played to all his strengths, and he plays it just right, gliding in and out of the star and the fan, creating distinct identities and outlines in one scene, and blurring the lines just so in the next. It is a wonderful, grasping, knowing performance, the actor and the star all rolled in one, all at our service, even as they service Shah Rukh Khan’s stratospheric stardom.  FAN is an out-and-out Shah Rukh Khan show, in which the star proves again, after a too-long gap, that he can greenlight roles completely out of his comfort zone, and deliver. It is what’s called a command performance. Only trouble, after this terrific three-hander—all deft elision, switcheroos and nods– Shah Rukh Khan can never go back to lazily sending himself up again.

'Main Hun Toh Tu Hai, Main Nahi To Tu Bhi Nahi', these lines would have sounded like any other filler but when we have a 'fan' uttering this to his favourite superstar—it does leave an indelible impact. The audience gave Gaurav wolf whistles and loud applause. And the response of the audience just didn't stop! Gaurav's desi dialogues, made us dilliwalahs go literally bonkers. Director Maneesh Sharma might be known for 'Band Baaja Baarat', but now he shall be better known for helming 'FAN'. The background score of the movie successfully pulled off a thriller, by keeping the audiences hooked, booked and cooked—all at the same time! Thankfully, there is no song-dance sequence in FAN!  The movie encapsulates the fandom which SRK as a star enjoys and why his fans must watch this to understand how he achieved what he did. All in all, even if you aren't SRK's 'Jabra' Fan, you are bound to become one after watching his bestest performance till date. To make it sound a little filmy, I will end by saying, 'Rehne De Tu Nahi Samjhega'!
